Following the successful completion of almost three weeks in outer space, the Ax-4 mission team member, Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, along with his crewmates, started their journey back to Earth. The crew members undocked from the International Space Station (ISS) on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft, titled Grace, on July 14. It will take them about 22 hours to return to Earth, with a splashdown planned for July 15 off the United States coast.
This is India’s landmark mission, where a private space firm, Axiom Space, led the crew on a commercial spaceflight that included an Indian military pilot. Shukla, also known as “Shux,” actively participated in conducting scientific experiments during her time on the ISS.
During the course of the mission, the four-member crew executed over 25 science experiments. These included microgravity experiments such as cell culture research, protein crystallization, and testing space-compatible farming methods. The Indian astronaut also helped with the research on monitoring mental health and tracking glucose levels in space.
The team is returning valuable scientific samples, such as sprouted plant tissues and biological cells, to be studied by Earth-based scientists. Results could benefit future long-duration missions and enhance India’s future space missions, such as ISRO’s Gaganyaan.
When the capsule slowly and controlled
descends through Earth’s atmosphere, recovery teams wait in position to recover the astronauts when they land. Splashdown into the ocean is the procedure whereby recovery ships and helicopters wait in readiness to provide safe and rapid extraction.
Family and relatives of the crew, particularly in Shukla’s hometown in Uttar Pradesh, are eagerly looking forward to their safe return. Schools around India are also preparing to broadcast the landing live, making this event a national pride moment.
Key Takeaway: Shubhanshu Shukla’s return from the Ax-4 mission is not only a personal milestone but a milestone for India’s contribution to global space cooperation.
