With mounting gossip about his political intentions, experienced Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor clarified that he has no plans of quitting the Congress to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His statement comes after a flurry of media speculation, fueled by his recent interactions with BJP politicians and remarks which some interpreted as appreciation for government policies.

No Plans to Switch Sides

In an interview, Tharoor strongly denied any talks with the BJP and dismissed the suggestion that he might defect. “I have always been a Congressional representative and remain one,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to the party he has represented for nearly two decades. He further emphasized that his political values are deeply rooted in the Congress ideology, and he sees no reason to change course.

Public Appreciation, Not Political Realignment

The speculation partly followed after Union Minister Suresh Gopi made the remark that Tharoor is “desired by the people” and suggested that he might announce his future on the basis of public interest. Tharoor, however, clarified that voicing appreciation for some national initiatives, such as humanitarian evacuations or cultural diplomacy, should not be taken as political alignment.

He argued that, as a responsible MP, it is only normal to recognize the good job achieved by any government when it’s in the interest of the people, regardless of party affiliations.

Criticism Isn’t Disloyalty

Tharoor also countered criticism within his party that he has been overbearing or self-willed. He clarified that debate and critique should be fostered within any Democratic Party, particularly one with the legacy of Congress. He conceded that the party requires greater grassroots reach and organization but maintained that reform had to come from within and not leave ship.

Emphasis Continues on Kerala and Congress

In the midst of maelstrom speculation, Tharoor’s political attention remains squarely on his constituency and building the Congress in Kerala. He said he was optimistic that the party could pick up pace with the right approach and interaction.
