‘Severe Cyclone Montha’ is advancing toward India’s east coast: When and where it could make landfall

Severe Cyclone Montha

India’s eastern seaboard is placed on red alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued alerts regarding an incoming ‘severe cyclonic storm’ Montha, which is likely to land later this week. The cyclone, which has formed over the Bay of Bengal, has developed at a fast pace and can pose strong winds, heavy showers, and high sea conditions to some coastal states such as Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal.

Cyclone Montha develops over the Bay of Bengal
IMD’s latest update informs that the low-pressure system which emerged over the southeast Bay of Bengal has developed into a deep depression and further developed into a cyclonic storm called Montha. The storm is traveling in a north-west direction and will develop into a ‘severe cyclone’ in the next 24 hours.

Predicted landfall and affected areas
Meteorologists are expecting Cyclone Montha to come ashore between the coasts of Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh by Friday evening. The precise route continues to be tracked, but initial models suggest that areas like Ganjam, Gajapati, Visakhapatnam, and Srikakulam can expect the worst of it. Authorities have issued warnings of wind speeds of more than 110 kmph, along with heavy rain and potential storm surges in low-lying regions.

Preparations and evacuations in progress
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in the affected areas, and the state governments have also put the control rooms on alert for coordinating the rescue efforts. The fishing operations in the Bay of Bengal have also been totally shut down, and fishermen have been asked not to go to the sea until further notice. Villages along the coast are being evacuated as a precautionary step, with temporary relief centers being organized for residents in high-risk areas.

Effect on transport and infrastructure
Train and flight operations along the eastern corridor will stand to be disrupted by heavy rains and gusts of wind. The Eastern Railways have already issued a possible rescheduling of operations, while Visakhapatnam and Paradip ports have been put on high alert. Power supply and telecommunication cables along coastal districts will also suffer interruptions at the height of the storm.

Experts advise caution and readiness
The IMD has advised people in the impacted areas to remain indoors at the time of the landfall of the cyclone and refrain from making unnecessary journeys. Officials dealing with disasters are monitoring the movement of the storm closely via satellite information and have ensured that all emergency response teams are prepared.

As Cyclone Montha draws near, the central and state governments have emphasized public cooperation and early preparedness to reduce casualties and damage to property.
