The Juvenile Justice Board in Pune has ruled that the 17-year-old youth who is charged in the deadly Porsche collision case will be dealt with as per the juvenile law, even though the police had urged them to try him as an adult. The accident, which killed two IT professionals in May 2024, caused huge outrage, particularly following the teenager’s prompt release on bail.
Fatal Crash and Drunk Driving Allegations
The teenager, allegedly driving a high-speed Porsche while under the influence of alcohol, crashed into a bike, killing two software engineers instantly. Police investigations claimed that the minor had consumed alcohol at a party before taking the car out. Multiple CCTV footage showed him drinking with friends at a pub hours before the crash.
Blood Sample Tampering Claims
In the aftermath of the incident, serious charges were leveled that the blood sample of the teenager was replaced in order to cover up the alcohol evidence. Police reported that his family tried to substitute his sample with another’s. Investigations showed that the first blood sample drawn at the hospital was that of a family friend of the suspect and not the suspect himself. The second bid at another hospital was allegedly declined by hospital staff with claims of intentional tampering.
Action On Juvenile Justice Board Members
Public outrage mounted after the JJB released the minor on bail within just 15 hours of the crash. Two board members were subsequently served with show-cause notices for procedural irregularities. Authorities have opened internal investigations into whether procedures were flouted while making the rash decision to release the minor on bail.
Juvenile Trial to Continue
Though it was a serious offense, the JJB ruled that the minor cannot be tried as an adult under the Juvenile Justice Act. This implies he should be tried with a focus on rehabilitation, not punishment. The ruling has sparked renewed controversy over how the legal system treats minors who commit violent crimes.
Next Hearing and Legal Path Ahead
The judicial process now proceeds in the juvenile system, and more hearings are likely to determine charges and penalties. Police have been disappointed by the decision but indicated they will keep searching for justice through all legal means available.
