President Murmu Sanctions Prosecution of Lalu Prasad Yadav in Land-for-Jobs Scam

Lalu Prasad Yadav

President Droupadi Murmu has officially sanctioned the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to prosecute Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad Yadav in the land-for-jobs scam. The move gives strength to the ongoing probe, where a string of top leaders, including those from Lalu’s family, are already in the dock.

Case Dates Back to Yadav’s Tenure as Railway Minister

The scam is said to have occurred when Lalu Yadav was serving as Union Railway Minister from 2004-2009. The CBI says that various people were posted to Group D jobs on Indian Railways in a manner not in line with proper procedure. In return, parcels of land were said to have been shifted to members of Lalu Yadav’s family at very cheap rates.

Charges Include Corruption and Criminal Conspiracy

The CBI has been filing a case against Lalu on different provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code. These include charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, and bribery. Since presidential sanctions now exist, full-fledged chargeheets and trial proceedings can advance more rapidly.

Tejashwi Yadav, Rabri Devi Also Under Scanner

The CBI case does not end there. His wife and ex-Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi, as well as his son and current Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav, are some of the key players whose actions are being investigated. The agency feels the family employed political clout to gain from the deals and appointments.

Political Reactions Split Down Party Lines

Expectedly, the governing BJP has greeted the President’s approval to prosecute as a move towards accountability and justice. The RJD, however, says the probe is politically motivated and aimed at defaming the image of Lalu Yadav and his family members in the run-up to crucial state elections.

Next Steps in Legal Proceedings

Once the sanction is obtained, the CBI will file its chargesheet in detail in the near future. The special court for corruption cases will then determine whether to take cognizance and issue summons to the accused. Legal experts opine that the case could be a precedent for how political abuse of office is tried in India.
