PM Releases Coin Depicting ‘Bharat Mata’ to Celebrate 100 Years of RSS; Opposition Expresses Concerns

100 Years of RSS

In a move that has sparked both celebration and criticism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday released a commemorative coin carrying the image of ‘Bharat Mata’ to mark the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). This is the first time such imagery has appeared on Indian currency, making it a historic but politically charged decision.

A Century of RSS Legacy

The coin was released as part of a series of celebrations marking 100 years of the RSS, an institution that has been a crucial force in shaping nationalist thinking in India. In his address to the ceremony, the Prime Minister stated that the coin represented “the eternal spirit of India” and symbolized the contribution of the organization to social and cultural life.

He went on to explain that the icon of Bharat Mata was a symbol of unity and sacrifice, values which the RSS has tried to maintain throughout the decades.

Sectarian Motive Sees Opposition

While the party in power welcomed the release as an occasion for national pride, opposition parties were quick to protest. Congress and Left leaders claimed that putting ‘Bharat Mata’ on the currency tended to blur the distinction between state and ideology.

This is not done to honor India, but to advance the RSS’s sectarian agenda,” opposition spokesperson K. Suresh said, criticising the government for politicising national symbols ahead of elections.

Symbolism and Public Reactions

The commemorative coin design depicts Bharat Mata standing with the national flag, with rays representing prosperity and power surrounding her. Supporters have termed the step an overdue recognition of cultural identity, but critics say it has the potential to alienate segments of society that might not subscribe to the RSS worldview.

Social media responses were polarised—hashes celebrating the launch trended along with ones deliberating whether India’s currency should bear politically charged symbols.

Historical and Political Significance

Commemorative coins have been issued earlier in India to commemorate social reformers, freedom fighters, and institutions, but the current move is the first to cite an ideological symbol in direct reference to a socio-political group. Experts feel the move will rekindle arguments about secularism, national identity, and the state role in representation of culture.

What Lies Ahead

As the RSS begins its centenary year, the coin launch has already established the tone for a high-voltage political season. With elections looming, the decision will likely become a new flashpoint between the ruling BJP and opposition parties, mirroring the highly contested narratives of nationalism in contemporary India.
