Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the ambitious Ken-Betwa river connectivity project in Madhya Pradesh, stressing on the transformation of water conservation and irrigation. Speaking at the event, PM Modi said that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s vision of sustainable development is a pioneer in water equity management, he said.
A special work done
The Ken-Betwa project, which is part of the National Plan for Connecting Rivers, aims to address water scarcity issues in the drought-prone region of Bundelkhand. The project ensures that water is supplied in excess and will be connected from Ken River to Betwa River by a 221 km-long canal, irrigation canal, improved drinking water supply and electricity generation.
“The Ken-Betwa project symbolizes India’s commitment to environmental sustainability and rural development. It will provide water to more than 62 lakh people and irrigate more than 10 lakh hectares of agricultural land,” PM Modi said in his speech.
Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy proved it.
Prime Minister Modi meets Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who said his vision of using water for national development remains the guiding principle of such projects. “The doctor. Ambedkar always believed in the scientific utilization of water resources. This project is a testament to his ideals,” Modi said.
Key benefits of the project
1. Irrigation and Agriculture: The project will provide irrigation to 10.62 lakh hectares of agricultural land in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
2. Water Supply: It endeavors to provide drinking water to about 6.2 million people in the Bundelkhand region.
3. Power generation: The project includes plans for hydroelectricity, which contributes to the creation of renewable energy.
4. Development of Rural Economy: By addressing water scarcity, the project is expected to increase agricultural productivity and improve rural livelihoods.
Environmental concerns have been addressed.
The project has faced criticism over environmental concerns, particularly in the Emerald Tiger Reserve. PM Modi assured that the government was committed to balancing development with biodiversity conservation. “We are taking all necessary steps to run the business responsibly and sustainably,” he said.
Looking ahead
The completion of the Ken-Betwa project in the next eight years is an important step towards connecting rivers and reducing water scarcity in India. This project is also part of the government’s broader commitment to water supply protection, which is consistent with rural development in the country.
As the nation witnesses the beginning of this historic project, PM Modi’s message reiterated the importance of visionary leadership in meeting today’s challenges.
