Following the killing spree by terrorists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India has made a robust diplomatic move by suspending visa services to Pakistani nationals and directing those present in the country to depart. The move has been made in light of the fact that Pakistan-based terror groups are being blamed by India for the attack, which left 26 people dead, including 25 Indian travelers and one Nepal visitor.
Visa Services Halted, Pakistanis Told to Depart
All visa categories given to Pakistani citizens except medical visas have been suspended immediately, officials of the Ministry of External Affairs stated. Those already in possession of valid visas are told to depart India by April 27. However, holders of medical visas have been allowed a short reprieve, extendable until April 29, in light of humanitarian considerations.
Safety Advisory for Indian Citizens
The government has also released a new advisory advising Indian citizens against traveling to Pakistan till further notice. Indians already living in Pakistan are asked to immediately return to India because of tensions and the possibility of more diplomatic repercussions.
Deeper Measures to Counter the Attack
This action is part of a larger series of steps taken by India following the terror attack, which has left the country reeling. The government is said to be examining its participation in a number of bilateral agreements, such as the Indus Waters Treaty. Additionally, the Attari-Wagah land border crossing has temporarily been closed and diplomatic relations reduced, with each side recalling a number of their envoys and personnel.
Message of Zero Tolerance
The Indian government has reaffirmed that such terror attacks, which are reportedly supported by groups operating from Pakistani soil, will not be tolerated. The officials have underlined that the measures being undertaken are aimed at conveying a clear message — that the lives of Indian citizens cannot be risked without there being repercussions.
With investigations continuing and security in the region heightened, India’s new steps represent a dramatic worsening of its diplomatic posture against Pakistan. The atmosphere remains charged, and more steps are expected to follow as the government pursues its response to what it called an “unprovoked and cowardly act of terrorism.”
