Delhi: Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has talked about the contours of the India-China relationship since the slow disengagement at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. Talking about the nuances of the relationship, he said that even though both countries have been able to address about 75% of the immediate friction points, there are still issues. He added that the border cannot become peaceful before other moves to be taken to enhance the bilateral relations. The disengagement process, following a series of diplomatic and military-level talks, has brought back near-normalcy to the region. However, both the countries are holding substantial armed forces along the LAC. This situation has required careful patrolling protocols to be followed.

The Galwan Incident and its Impact

The Jaishankar underlined that the June 2020 Galwan Valley clash marked a permanent transformation in the dynamics of India-China relations, as there were casualties on both sides. Indian government made it very clear that peaceful borders are an essential prerequisite for any form of substantive engagement between India and China. Jaishankar argues that the violence and tensions at the border cannot be isolated from the overall relationship, overshadowing other areas of cooperation.

The Path Forward: Beyond Disengagement

To date, disengagement is thought to be an important step but only part of the way forward. The next stage, Jaishankar said, was “de-escalation,” or further de-intensification of troop positions and restoration of patrol patterns that were disrupted in 2020. Speaking at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, Jaishankar said that any step forward in India-China ties is contingent upon continued peace and tranquility along their 3,500-kilometer border, an area with long-standing disputes. He concluded that the situation was “dangerous” and that only when both could control a full de-escalation would things get really safe.

The India-China relationship is very challenging in itself, the two of the most powerful power of the world. Jaishankar’s remarks have underlined the intricacies of striking a balance between border security and diplomatic engagement and the imperative of peace at the LAC as a precursor to stable relations in the future.
