Operation Sindoor to be taught in schools as NCERT readies for new curriculum addition

Operation Sindoor 4

The NCERT is set to incorporate a comprehensive report on Operation Sindoor into its school curricula, with the aim of imparting knowledge of one of India’s recent anti-terror operations to students in Classes 3 to 12. This comes after a terror attack occurred in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22, which killed many and enraged the whole country. In retaliation, the Indian Army executed Operation Sindoor on May 7 against various terror camps along the Line of Control. NCERT officials have now resolved to introduce this live strategic development in school classrooms as part of their initiative to integrate current national developments with schooling.

For younger students of Classes 3 to 8, the material will be framed in easy-to-understand terms, giving increased emphasis to the values of courage, national pride, and coordination between forces. Older students in Classes 9 to 12 will be provided a more comprehensive explanation with added emphasis on military planning, intelligence gathering, and the larger national security dimensions of the operation. NCERT has informed us that the study material will be approximately 8 to 10 pages and in a simple language.

This new module should not be included in current textbooks but published independently as a special classroom material. Instruction shall be provided to teachers on how to integrate it into classes, particularly for topics such as Social Science and Political Studies. It is not merely about commemorating a victory in the military but also about alerting students to how India reacts to external threats and what types of integrated efforts are involved in such campaigns.

Apart from Operation Sindoor, NCERT also plans to include other new subjects such as India’s space missions—Chandrayaan, Aditya L1, and astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla’s recent space travel. These subjects are chosen in order to motivate students and make them feel connected to recent national achievements.

This action is part of a larger initiative under the National Education Policy 2020, which seeks to make the curriculum more indigenous in terms of India’s modern-day achievements and ethos. By introducing real events into academic material, NCERT hopes to build more intelligent and active young citizens who comprehend the nation’s defense, diplomacy, and scientific development outside textbook theory.
