Weather News

The air quality in the Delhi region continues to deteriorate as the overall Air Quality Index stayed around 400, classifying it in the ‘very poor’ to ‘severe’ categories. ALARC stations registered alarming levels of pollution, which has sparked concerns amongst health officials and residents. The deterioration in the air quality has been coupled with local emission sources, dust from construction, pollution from vehicles, and adverse weather conditions that have led to the stagnation of pollution within the region.

The government gives stern warning to offenders

In a reaction to the development, Delhi’s environment minister, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, warned offending industrial units and construction companies of serious actions due to violations of pollution control rules. The minister stated that his government will not condone any activity that contributes to pollution in the city at a time when the city already follows a string of restrictions in accordance with its Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

Construction ban in the limelight

Sirsa particularly emphasized the violation of the ban on the construction/demolition sector, which is mandatorily implemented if the quality of the air suffers. He said, “Our teams have been instructed to conduct random checks at the industrial sites as well as construction sites. If found to be functioning illegally, the industries will be closed immediately, and the necessary steps will be taken against them.” The minister emphasized that industries cannot function at the expense of the health of the citizenry.

The sectors urged to ensure compliance.

The government of Delhi has further directed the industrial units to strictly adhere to the pollution levels, fuels, and the functionality of the pollution control devices. According to Sirsa, the government will treat those violating pollution levels seriously, and the government is contemplating revoking the licences of the violating industrial units. He stated that the primary focus remains the health of the citizens, the children, and the elderly.

Health Advisory for Residents

As the level of air pollution remains hazardous, locals are advised to reduce outdoor exposure, wear masks when going outdoors, and utilize air purifiers in homes. Reducing exposure to air outdoors has also been recommended for schools with children, and people with respiratory illnesses are advised to consult health professionals in case of deteriorating symptoms.

Relief is not in sight
Weather experts further added that there was no likelihood of any relief for the time being, as there were no wind speeds and low mix heights that were hindering the dispersal of these emissions. It was further revealed that the enforcement activities would continue aggressively until the quality of the air changes for the better. The minister has urged the public to cooperate with the government by avoiding unnecessary trips and adhering to the guidelines for the control of pollution.
