Lutyens’ Delhi is set to witness a vibrant transformation as the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) plans an ambitious plantation of over 3.25 lakh tulip bulbs. The initiative, part of a larger mission to enhance the city’s aesthetics, will cover key locations such as Shanti Path, Akbar Road, Connaught Place, Parliament House, and 52 iconic roundabouts.
₹2.19 Crore Investment in Beautification
This beautification project, with an estimated budget of ₹2.19 crore, will feature tulips in seven striking colours. A total of 5.5 lakh tulip bulbs are being imported from the Netherlands, out of which NDMC will use 3.25 lakh bulbs for its targeted locations. The remaining bulbs will be distributed among the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for their respective parks and green spaces. Both agencies will finance their shares of the bulbs.
Local and Regenerated Seeds to Play a Role
In addition to the imported bulbs, NDMC will utilize over 50,000 seeds preserved from last year’s tulip cycle, which were regenerated by the CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology in Palampur. Furthermore, 18,000 tulip plants are being cultivated locally at NDMC’s advanced propagation chamber in Lodhi Garden.
Expansion of Storage and Propagation Facilities
To support this growing initiative, NDMC is upgrading its climate-controlled tulip storage and propagation facilities at Lodhi Garden. The facility’s capacity is being expanded from 20,000 to 36,000 bulbs to accommodate the increasing scale of plantation efforts.
Tulip Plantation Timeline and Bloom Period
The tulip plantation is scheduled to begin in mid-December, with flowers expected to bloom within 30–40 days. Residents and visitors can look forward to a breathtaking display of tulips by late January or early February.
Strategic Planning for New Locations
NDMC teams are conducting surveys to identify new plantation sites with ample water supply and minimal traffic, ensuring optimal conditions for the tulips to thrive.
Building on Last Year’s Success
This year’s initiative builds on the success of last year, when over 2 lakh tulips were planted, adding vibrant colours to prominent areas like Shanti Path. The project is part of NDMC’s ongoing efforts to make Delhi greener and more picturesque.
This floral endeavor underscores NDMC’s commitment to transforming Delhi into a city that reflects both natural beauty and sustainable urban planning.
