Flight operations at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were severely affected on Wednesday as relentless rain pounded the city, causing chaos for thousands of passengers. Officials confirmed that over 350 flights were delayed, while at least 15 aircraft were forced into midair go-arounds and two flights had to be diverted due to poor weather conditions.

Travelers stranded due to delays

A number of passengers said that they waited for many hours within the airport as landings and take-offs were continuously delayed. The persistent rain lowered visibility on the runway, and air traffic controllers decided to hold incoming flights and reset departures. Footage on social media indicated long queues, tired travelers, and packed terminals as airlines tried to cope with the disruptions.

Go-arounds and diversions due to safety

Airport officials clarified that a minimum of 15 flights had tried to land but were asked to return to the air as a result of dangerous conditions on the runway. In two instances, arriving aircraft were sent to nearby airports in Ahmedabad and Goa. Authorities stated that safety was of the utmost concern, and casualties or accidents were not reported despite the high traffic and weather constraints.

Airlines issue advisories

IndiGo, Air India, and Vistara, among others, advised people to check flight status on websites or apps before leaving for the airport, threatening more delays if rain continues. Several airlines also dropped rescheduling fees for passengers.

Mumbai reels under monsoon fury

Not only did the heavy rain upset air traffic, but it also led to heavy waterlogging in various areas of the city, adding to the misery of regular commuters. Meteorological authorities have forecast additional rain over the next few days, with the fear of additional disruption to transport and civic life.

In the meantime, as airport activity goes on with constant vigil, authorities have instructed flyers to have additional travel time in reserve and to keep an eye open for flight status alerts as Mumbai navigates the ferocity of the monsoon.
