Mumbai is struggling under heavy rains, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) declaring a red alert on Monday. The constant rain, which started in the wee hours, has paralyzed most of the city, inundating major roads, tracks, and low-lying areas. The IMD’s red alert indicates a high probability of very heavy rainfall, advising people to remain indoors and exercise caution.
Transport Disrupted Across the City
As waterlogging worsened in several parts of the city—especially in areas like Dadar, Kurla, Andheri, and Sion—both road and rail transportation faced severe disruptions. Local train services, considered Mumbai’s lifeline, were delayed or temporarily suspended on multiple lines. Several BEST buses were also rerouted or canceled due to submerged roads, leaving thousands of commuters stranded during morning peak hours.
Schools Shut, Emergency Teams Deployed
To tackle the deteriorating situation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) directed all schools and colleges to close for the day. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local disaster response teams were deployed in flood areas to help with rescue operations and relief. BMC also set up 24×7 emergency helplines for distressed citizens.
Red Alert for the Next 24 Hours
Heavy rain is likely to persist for another 24 hours, and isolated extremely heavy showers cannot be ruled out in certain places, according to the IMD prediction. Mumbai and the neighboring districts of Thane, Palghar, and Raigad are under red alert. Authorities have requested people not to venture out unless absolutely necessary and keep themselves informed through proper channels.
Social Media Flooded With SOS Calls
Facebook and Twitter are filled with photos, videos, and SOS messages from citizens trapped in the mess. A lot of them are calling for assistance, particularly those trapped in water-logged areas or who cannot go home because of transport shutdowns. Volunteers and NGOs have also come to the rescue, distributing food, shelter, and aid to victims.
As Mumbai experiences another intense monsoon episode, authorities keep a close watch on the situation, asking citizens to remain safe and heed all warnings.
