In a proud moment for Indian infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the New Pamban Bridge, the country’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. Stretching 2.08 kilometres, it features 99 spans, including a 72.5-meter-long lift span that can rise 17 meters to let ships pass beneath. This means no interruptions for either trains above or vessels below—something the old bridge struggled with.
What makes this bridge truly special is its resilience. Constructed with high-quality, corrosion-resistant materials, and cutting-edge welding techniques, it’s designed to thrive in harsh coastal weather with minimal maintenance. Even more impressively, it’s ready for the future, with support for dual rail tracks.
This isn’t just an upgrade—it’s a transformation.

For the people of Rameswaram and the countless pilgrims who visit its revered temples, this bridge is much more than a structure. It’s a lifeline.
