Commuters along the Mahipalpur–Mehrauli route were caught unawares on Saturday morning when a section of the road under the Masoodpur flyover collapsed. The incident occurred near Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, after a wall at an under-construction Delhi Metro site allegedly collapsed. The vandalism resulted in a section of the road surface subsiding, and authorities were compelled to block the area immediately. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the incident caused a significant traffic jam in the highly congested corridor.
Immediate Response and Road Diversions
The Delhi Traffic Police immediately took action, setting up barricades and diverting cars from the affected area. In their advisory, police asked drivers coming from Mehrauli to Mahipalpur to turn away from the straight road under the flyover. Drivers should take Aruna Asaf Ali Marg through the Fortis Hospital sector instead. Ground traffic staff have been deployed to enable commuters to drive through the diversions smoothly.
Probable Cause of the Collapse
Early observations indicate that the collapse may have been caused by recent heavy rainfall in Delhi that could have caused the soil and retaining walls surrounding the construction site to weaken. Repair work has already been initiated by the authorities, but considering the severity of the damage, traffic flow on this stretch may take a while to normalize. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is also conducting the site’s safety assessment before reopening it for public access.
Broader Rain-Related Issues in the City
The Masoodpur accident is just one of the many infrastructure failures Delhi has experienced following incessant monsoon rains. In Jaitpur, another wall collapse killed seven people, including children. Roads across various areas in the city — from Mathura Road and Panchkuian Marg to RK Puram and Kidwai Nagar — have been badly waterlogged, contributing to travel time delays. The India Meteorological Department had previously issued a red alert for the area before downgrading it to yellow, but predictions continue to foretell additional rain in the next couple of days.
Safety Reminder for Commuters
Officials are asking residents to remain informed about traffic warnings, to heed diversion signs, and to plan for longer travel times. Those traveling through areas near active construction zones need to be even more careful this time of year. Although no one was killed in the Masoodpur tunnel collapse, it is a reminder that road conditions in Delhi during the monsoon months can turn on a dime — and foresight is necessary for remaining safe on the road.
