Manipur: The Northeastern state of Manipur has lived with ethnic tension for decades. Again, it is facing fresh violence, this time particularly in the Jiribam region. Cases of deaths and injuries have compelled the central government to deploy additional central police forces there. The crisis has a historical background of ethnic as well as communal divisions within the state.
Major Ethnic Groups
Manipur’s population is broadly split between the Meiteis, who are predominantly Hindu and inhabiting the valley, and the tribals, mainly consisting of Kukis and Nagas, who inhabit the hills. Meiteis comprise the majority and operate at the political and economic helm, while the tribals, categorized as Scheduled Tribes (ST), allege systemic neglect and discrimination.
The Cause of the Conflict
The current crisis has roots in ethnic tension within land reservations and political representation. When a recent court ruling granted Scheduled Tribe status to the Meiteis, hill tribe groups were and still are resentful because they fear losing their exclusive rights over land and other resources. Protests and counter-protests turned violence into clashes.
Government Response
Increased security measures by both the state and central government include imposing curfews and deploying paramilitary forces. The peace talks have been held, but so far, nothing tangible has come out of them. The government has appealed for restraint and urged the parties to the conflict to enter into a dialogue.
Effects on Civilians
Till date, lots of people have lost their homes, and educational institutions, businesses, and transport services have been dislocated. Government has opened relief camps but the situation remains threatening.
Manipur’s problems highlights the deep-seated ethnic fault lines that call for long-term resolution through inclusive policies and dialogue. An urgent focus on de-escalation is necessary in order to restore peace before further bloodshed occurs.
