Delhi: West Bengal opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari has created a political storm with a fiery remark aimed at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Addressing a rally in Sandesh Khali, Adhikari declared that if it comes to power in the state, the BJP will ensure that Banerjee remains in jail.

The accusations made by the officer

In his speech, Adhikari accused the Trinamool Congress government of widespread corruption and misuse of public funds. “People of Bengal are suffering under Mamata Banerjee’s corrupt and authoritarian rule. If BJP comes to power, we will investigate every scandal and put her in jail,” he said.

The chief spoke about the alleged irregularities in schemes like PMAY (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana) and the coal scam and vowed to hold TMC leaders accountable.

TMC’s Response

The TMC reacted immediately, dismissing Adhikari’s claim as baseless and politically motivated. Senior TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said, “Suvendu Adhikari is trying to divert attention from his failure. The BJP is indulging in cheap games as they have no plans for the development of Bengal.”

Adhikari has also been accused of using heated language to affect voting numbers and create unrest among upcoming elections by the TMC leaders.

Political context

The incident came at a time of fierce political rivalry between the BJP and the TMC in West Bengal. The BJP, which emerged as the main opposition in the 2021 Assembly elections, continues to accuse the TMC government of corruption and maladministration.

On the other hand, the TMC alleged that the BJP was misusing central agencies like ED and CBI to harass its leaders.

Public response

Adhikari’s comments have created controversy among voters in Bengal. While BJP supporters lauded his tough stance against corruption, critics accused him of taking personal attacks instead of focusing on issues of governance.

Looking ahead

As West Bengal gears up for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the political friction is expected to escalate. Adhikari’s statement reflects the BJP’s aggressive campaign strategy to strengthen its position in the state. Whether these bold statements speak to voters or have a negative effect remains to be seen.

For now, the battle between TMC and BJP continues in Bengal politics.
