Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old suspect, has been arrested for the murder of Brian Thompson, the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, who was shot dead last week in New York City. Mangione’s struggles with chronic back pain were well-documented, both through personal accounts and an apparent online presence. RJ Martin, who runs the Surfbeak co-living space in Honolulu where Mangione lived in 2022, described him as “intelligent, accomplished,” and someone who “fit the bill” for their community. However, Martin also noted the debilitating nature of Mangione’s back condition. “He confided in me about his misaligned spine and pinched nerve, saying that dating or being physically intimate wasn’t possible. My heart just breaks,” Martin told The New York Times.
