Kolkata Law College Gang-Rape Case: Security Guard Arrested, Becomes Fourth Accused

Kolkata Rape case

In the latest update in the Kolkata law college gang-rape case, West Bengal Police have arrested a security guard of the college, the fourth arrest in the ongoing probe. The case, which took place within the South Calcutta Law College campus, was the gang-rape of a first-year law student on the night of June 25.

Guard Allegedly Present During Assault

The 55-year-old security officer, who was on duty at the college, is suspected to have been around when the offense was committed. Police sources said the attack occurred in a room close to the guard’s desk. It was confirmed by CCTV footage that the guard was close by, but he reportedly did not raise an alarm or act.

Officers observed inconsistencies in his account during interrogation, mainly regarding his awareness of the incident and why he did not report it. Therefore, the authorities now suspect that he either aided the crime by turning a blind eye or was actively involved.

Three Others Already in Custody

Earlier, three people had been arrested in relation to the case—two senior students and a former student who is presently employed at the college. All three were nabbed under sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with gang-rape and conspiracy. They are still in police custody as the probe goes on.

The medical examination of the survivor has strengthened her complaint, with doctors testifying to evidence of physical assault and sexual contact without consent.

College Under Fire for Lapses

The event has led to outrage on a large scale, with serious questions being asked regarding campus security and the responsibility of the staff. The fact that the crime was said to have occurred within a college room at night has further fueled public anger. College officials have cordoned off the crime scene and are working with police, but critics point out that there was a serious failure in monitoring and security.

Student organizations and rights groups have called for a comprehensive audit of security measures, including increased checks on staff and surveillance system upgrades.

Political and Legal Pressure Builds

As the case gains public attention, political opposition leaders have criticized the state government for not ensuring students’ safety on campus. The National Commission for Women has also noticed and called for speedy justice and improved institutional protection.

The detention of the security guard brings new twists to the case, not only to emphasize the purported acts of the accused students but also institutional lack of care. Investigators now strive to establish the complete roles of each suspect, while popular pressure for accountability mounts.
