New Delhi: Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport faced severe flooding on Monday following a bout of heavy rainfall, leading to widespread waterlogging on the runway and disrupting airport operations. The city recorded its highest single-day rainfall for August in 14 years, registering approximately 142 millimeters of rain within 24 hours.

The deluge affected various parts of the city, causing substantial inconvenience. Several long-distance trains were rescheduled, and the city’s Circular Railway services were suspended due to inundated tracks. Numerous roads and residential areas, particularly low-lying regions such as Lake Gardens, were submerged under knee-deep water.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Kolkata, predicting more heavy downpours in the coming days. The alert warns of very heavy rainfall ranging from 11 cm to 20 cm within a 24-hour period. This warning comes in the wake of Cyclone Remal, which is expected to make landfall between West Bengal’s Sagar Island and Bangladesh’s Khepupara. The cyclone is predicted to bring extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds to coastal districts, with wind speeds potentially reaching 80-90 km/h.

In response to the weather forecast, Kolkata airport authorities have suspended flight operations for 21 hours, from 12 PM Sunday to 9 AM Monday, to ensure passenger safety and to manage the adverse weather conditions effectively. Travelers are advised to check their flight schedules and allow extra time for their journeys to the airport.

The heavy rainfall has also led to traffic congestion in various parts of Kolkata, prompting local authorities to issue advisories and request residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. Videos and images circulating on social media show the extent of waterlogging at the airport and in other parts of the city, highlighting the challenges faced by the residents and commuters.

With the IMD’s forecast of continued heavy rainfall, Kolkata braces for further disruptions. Local officials are working to mitigate the impact of the flooding and ensure the safety and well-being of all residents. The situation remains dynamic, and residents are urged to stay informed through official updates and heed any safety advisories issued by the authorities.
