Kishtwar cloudburst tragedy: 37 killed, more than 100 injured en route to Machail Mata temple in J&K

Kishtwar cloudburst tragedy

A killer cloudburst hit Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir, claiming at least 37 lives and more than 100 injured while on the pilgrims’ route to the sacred Machail Mata temple. The devastating tragedy hit late in the evening, when hundreds of devotees and locals were caught unaware by torrential rains pounding the area.

Pilgrims trapped in unexpected tragedy

The cloudburst caused huge flash floods and landslides on the narrow mountainous road, carrying along makeshift tents, food stalls, and a few vehicles. Most of the dead and injured were pilgrims proceeding towards the Machail Mata shrine, a well-known religious place that attracts thousands of people every year during the annual yatra period. Witnesses reported scenes of panic as individuals fought to get out of the spouting waters, with rescue operators fighting darkness and dangerous ground to save those who were trapped.

Huge rescue operation under way

The Indian Army, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and police are deployed to undertake rescue and relief operations. Helicopters are being employed to airlift seriously injured victims to Kishtwar and Jammu hospitals. Emergency medical camps have been established near the spot by the authorities, whereas local volunteers are being utilized to provide food, water, and blankets to marooned pilgrims.

Government assures assistance and relief

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha was deeply grieved by the loss of lives and offered compensation to the families of the deceased and financial help to the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also gave condolences and said the Center would offer all assistance in relief work. Authorities have suspended the Machail Mata yatra temporarily until the path is made safe.

Risk of additional landslides persists

With more rain forecast in the next few days, authorities have cautioned that the risk of further landslides and flooding is high. Rescue teams are clearing accumulated debris and restoring access to isolated villages cut off by the landslides.

The disaster has placed a shadow on the traditional pilgrimage, making what is normally an experience of devotion and celebration one of sadness and bereavement for several hundred families.
