Tensions ran high in Agra as members of the Karni Sena organized a huge protest against a BJP MP for remarks made regarding Rajput warlord Rana Sanga. The protest, organized in its full traditional fervor, saw members of the Rajput community brandishing swords and hoisting slogans, demanding an unconditional public apology from the leader.
‘Insult to our legacy’: Rajput community fumes
The comments in question, provided by the MP in a recent address, were read by the Karni Sena as insulting to Rana Sanga—one of the greatest figures in the annals of Rajput history. The community termed the comments “historically illiterate and culturally insulting.” Protesters declared that any insult to Rana Sanga’s heritage would never be accepted under any condition.
Huge turnout, large police deployment in Agra
Thousands of protesters reached the venue, making it a show of togetherness and anger. The images of sword-carrying members chanting slogans and waving banners were spectacular, and so authorities deployed a large police force to avoid any untoward actions. Though the protest was peaceful in nature, security officials kept a high alert during the function.
Karni Sena gives ultimatum: ‘Apologize or boycott’
Speaking to the gathering, leaders of the Karni Sena announced that the MP’s refusal to apologize would lead to a complete boycott of political functions in the state with him. “We don’t have any problem with any political party, but we won’t let anyone tamper with or disown our history,” announced a senior Sena leader. They also warned of taking the agitation to other areas of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh if nothing was done.
The MP keeps mum, and the BJP also does not make any statements.
Up till now, the MP involved has not spoken about the scandal. The BJP has also kept mum, without endorsing or repudiating the remarks. Sources in the party indicate that internal deliberations are being held in an effort to clean up the mess without more public embarrassment.
