A massive landslide in the Ramban district caused the entire closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on Thursday, greatly affecting vehicular traffic between the two places. The landslide, which was caused by incessant rain in the region, occurred near the Mehar-Cafeteria section—one of the most susceptible landslide areas along the highway.
The closure of the highway resulted in traffic being suspended from both Srinagar and Jammu sides. Hundreds of trucks loaded with vital supplies and passenger vehicles were stuck, making it a difficult situation for commuters and local authorities.
Restoration work underway amid tough conditions
Almost as soon as the landslide was reported, the Border Roads Organization (BRO) and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) crews started the clearing operations. The officials state, though, that continuous rain and falling debris are slowing and posing a risk to the restoration effort.
“Work is underway to clear the road and open the highway at the earliest, but safety is our priority,” a senior traffic police officer said. Officials have suggested travelers stay away from the highway for the time being and monitor official traffic alerts.
Mughal Road reopens, provides temporary relief
In another major development, the Mughal Road—a vital road that links Poonch-Rajouri to south Kashmir—was reopened after an interim shutdown owing to snow and rain last week. The resumption of the Mughal Road has opened limited relief for some traffic, though not capable of dealing with the same traffic as the National Highway.
The highway, which cuts across the Pir Panjal mountain ranges, usually acts as a contingency in such interruptions but is prone to weather-induced closure itself.
Frequent disruptions are damaging to the supply chain and tourism.
Regular landslides and rain-induced halts on the Jammu-Srinagar Highway have been an enduring problem, not just affecting the movement of essentials but also the economy of the region’s tourism. With the onset of the Amarnath Yatra season, fears are mounting over the highway’s dependability and readiness for carrying heavy traffic.
Local businesspeople have also sounded the alarm, stating constant halts disrupt supply chains and cause huge economic losses.
Since weather conditions are still uncertain, officials are keeping a close eye on the situation and advising people to be careful while commuting through hilly areas.
