Jammu: In a tragic incident, in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army had lost one of its Junior Commissioned Officers, Naib Subedar Rakesh Kumar. Three other soldiers came out critically injured during an encounter with militants. The incident happened on November 10, 2024, in the Keshwan forest area, which has seen recent militancy. Reports of the incident have it that the operation began at around 11 a.m. when an Army local police joint team launched a search operation based on from armed militants suspected of carrying out attacks on Village Defence Guards (VDGs) in the vicinity.
Operations Details and Security Measures
After suspected militants killed two VDG members, the Army, in conjunction with local police, conducted a massive search operation in Kuntwara and Keshwan forests. The intense searching resulted in an exchange of fire early Sunday. In this operation, it was initially reported that four soldiers, one being Naib Subedar Kumar, were injured; they were immediately evacuated to a nearby hospital, where Kumar would later die. On his part, Kumar’s gallantry is recognized by the Army’s White Knight Corps for service rendered to the nation for national security.
Regional Impact and Ongoing Search
Reports say that the militants who were involved in this attack were from the same terrorist group that had already killed several VDGs earlier. The security forces have detected at least a few militants active in this area and are conducting an intense search operation to trace them. In this connection, the movement of civilians in the area has been restricted for the purpose of protecting them against the operation.

Another, a few kilometers off the same axis, took place in the Zabarwan forest near Srinagar. Reports mentioned that security forces exchanged fire with another group of militants.
