Israel is said to be preparing for the potential of a long military war with Iran as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East, following recent clashes. Israeli defense and intelligence bodies have changed their approach from conducting minimal strikes to preparing for a prolonged war that could last weeks or months, official sources confirm.
Israeli air raids
The new developments come after a series of Israeli air raids that purportedly hit Iran’s important military and nuclear targets, including installations close to Isfahan. The raids, which were said to be made with precise drones and possibly with the help of internal intelligence, killed a number of senior personnel in Iran’s military establishment. Iran has not openly disclosed the nature of the damage, but domestic media reported serious movement around central Iranian military and nuclear installations.
Iran’s expanding missile and drone capabilities
Israeli security officials think that Iran’s expanding missile and drone capabilities, as well as its continued backing of armed proxy forces such as Hezbollah, present a rising threat that cannot be met by short-term action alone. In the past few days, Israel’s military has raised its alert level and conducted country wide readiness exercises, indicating a change towards preparing for prolonged engagement.
In retaliation for the Israeli attacks, Iran has fired volleys of missile and drone strikes against Israeli cities and military installations. Though most were shot down by Israel’s Iron Dome and other defense systems, the total number used has caused concern both among the citizens of Israel and the international community. Tehran has stated that direct US and Western intervention would precipitate wider regional destabilization.
Israel on defence attack
The Israeli government, headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has declared that its actions are defensive and designed to thwart Iran from possessing nuclear weapons. Military officials have warned that Israel will take action unilaterally if need be to defend its national security interests.
At the same time, diplomatic efforts have tried to calm the situation, but so far without much success. The United Nations and most European countries have appealed for restraint, fearing that a full-scale war could escalate into a wider regional war between various countries and non-state actors.
While the immediate focus remains on security and defense, experts warn that without serious diplomatic intervention, the region could be heading toward a more dangerous and unpredictable phase of conflict. Israel’s preparations for a long war underscore the growing sense that a decisive resolution is unlikely in the near term.
