External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made it explicit on Tuesday that India will not have any kind of talks with Pakistan except on the topic of terrorism. His statement comes against the backdrop of increasing tension between the two neighbors after the recent terror attack on Pahalgam, which New Delhi has strongly connected with Pakistan-based outfits.
Indus Waters Treaty in Limbo
Supplementing India’s tougher line, Jaishankar added that even the Indus Waters Treaty, a long-standing accord between the two countries, has been suspended. “This is not the time for diplomatic niceties,” he asserted, emphasizing that negotiations cannot be held when India is still grappling with cross-border terrorism. He emphasized that the onus of providing a conducive atmosphere for dialogue lies squarely with Pakistan.
Message to International Community
Jaishankar’s words were also directed towards the international diplomatic community, which has called for both nations to resume talks. The minister once again made it clear that India has always been an advocate of peaceful coexistence, but the consistent violations of the ceasefire and killing on Indian territory make it impossible for talks in the present situation.
Background: Why the Shift in Policy
The minister’s assurance is a dramatic departure from the earlier efforts at backchannel diplomacy. Officials say the Pahalgam attack, in which several civilians and security personnel lost their lives, was a watershed. It re-emphasized India’s abiding stance that negotiations and terror cannot go together. New Delhi is now seeking more global pressure on Pakistan to eliminate terror groups functioning from its soil.
What’s Next?
While India remains firm on its stand, sources suggest that diplomatic efforts are still underway through multilateral platforms to isolate Pakistan globally on the terror front. Jaishankar’s declaration signals a phase of assertive diplomacy where India is no longer willing to tolerate provocations without consequences.
In short, India’s message is unequivocal – unless terrorism ends, dialogue is off the table.
