India strongly rejected the offer by former US President Donald Trump to mediate on the Kashmir dispute, asserting again that the issue is purely bilateral between New Delhi and Islamabad. The Indian government asserted that any discussion on Kashmir will only be held directly with Pakistan and that there is no scope for third-party intervention.
This is not the first instance of such a proposal made by Trump. His previous remarks in 2019 also created diplomatic tension, which India responded to with a categorical reiteration of its policy for a long time. A top Ministry of External Affairs official said, “There has been no change in India’s position on Kashmir. We do not accept external mediation.”
Trade Row Response
Apart from Kashmir, Trump also made a remark on the state of Indo-US trade relations, alleging unfair trade practices by India. This was rejected by the Indian government, with the assertion that the two nations remain committed to settling trade differences amicably.
India’s commerce minister explained that trade talks are still ongoing and that problems are being resolved on the basis of mutual respect and advantage. Officials insisted that it is not true to say India has behaved in bad faith or levied unfair tariffs, as Trump claimed.
Emphasis on Bilateral Relations
New Delhi insisted that although it appreciates good relations with Washington, such remarks do not assist much and only potentially provoke diplomatic misunderstandings. “We appreciate our strategic relationship with the US, but our sovereignty and stances on important matters need to be respected,” an Indian diplomat said.
The government further added that such statements can be politically inspired, considering Trump’s return to US election politics. Indian authorities stressed that domestic political narratives ought not to impact bilateral diplomatic ties.
Looking Ahead
India continues to be committed to having robust and transparent ties with the US. Diplomats are of the view that, despite the occasional differences, the overall relationship between the two democracies continues to be robust and cooperative, especially in the fields of defense, technology, and climate change.
As the world continues to focus on the geopolitical environment in South Asia, India continues to call for direct talks with Pakistan and resolution of all issues — peacefully, and without foreign help.
