India, China Complete Disengagement at Ladakh; Gift Exchange Scheduled for Tomorrow

chaina and india

Delhi: India and China have completed the disengagement process at the contested areas of Depsang and Demchok in eastern Ladakh as of October 29, 2024. The process included the removal of temporary structures like tents and tin sheds and the reversion to the pre-April 2020 established patrolling routes. Disengagement is an important step in the ongoing diplomatic efforts toward easing tensions along the LAC, where tensions have been maintained since the 2020 standoff. Depsang Status Updated in Demchok

The two most sensitive zones of the LAC have been Depsang and Demchok. Depsang is close to the strategically important Daulat Beg Oldi airbase and has witnessed frequent standoffs as it falls on the way to the Y-Junction, an important point for Indian patrols, which had been blocked by Chinese forces.

Chinese troops had pitched camps in Demchok west of Charding Nullah, which the international community considers to be Indian territory. In this disengagement process, such camps were taken apart, and roads were opened for both sides to patrol without blockades.

Confidence Building Measures and Gift Exchange

Indian and Chinese military personnel are to exchange gifts on October 30 to strengthen trust as an expression of goodwill and shared commitment to peace. This exchange of gifts is one of the steps in confidence-building between both sides and also supplements efforts to prevent such conflicts from arising again in the future. According to military sources, from now on, both countries will inform each other about the patrol schedules to avoid any accidental face-to-face along the LAC.

Next Steps for Lasting Peace

After disengagement, India and China are to implement a phased de escalation of military equipment and personnel and other steps of monitoring so that they will be fully compliant. There will also be local-level military dialogue between the two nations, which is directed toward any issues arising and in creating further confidence. In this stage, there would be constant communication; surveillance mechanisms will be kept in the areas of disengagement so that nothing untoward happens. The recent move is considered a major diplomatic accomplishment because it reflects a level of mutual interest in reducing tension along the borders and ushering in stability in that region. With the demilitarization process finished and other diplomatic steps also in place, both are optimistic about a lasting peace between the disputed border regions of the two nations.
