Direct passenger flights between India and China are finally going to resume from October 26 after a gap of almost five years. The decision has been taken after intense negotiations between the two countries’ aviation regulators, which is a major initiative in relaxing travel and enhancing bilateral relations.
Suspension Since the Pandemic and Tensions
Direct flights between the two nations had been suspended since 2019, at first because of the onset of COVID-19 and subsequently extended by diplomatic tensions. Entrepreneurs, students, and households had long complained about the lack of direct connectivity that compelled passengers to go on long routes via third countries like Singapore, Dubai, or Hong Kong.
Airlines to Fly on Main Routes
Under the deal, airlines of India and China will operate flights between major cities. Air India and IndiGo will likely open schedules for Delhi–Beijing and Mumbai–Shanghai routes, while Chinese airlines could resume operations from Guangzhou and Chengdu. Aviation authorities said the frequencies shall be capped at first but could increase depending on demand.
Students, Businesses Get Relief
The resumption of air services is particularly important for Indian students studying at Chinese universities, several of whom were having trouble reaching their campuses. Likewise, businesses involved in bilateral commerce—billions of dollars’ worth each year—hope the action will lower expenses and delays, providing new impetus to business exchanges.
Travel firms in both nations have already seen an increase in inquires, and fares are likely to stabilise once the usual services resume.
Diplomatic Undertones
The observers see the step as something greater than an aviation initiative. The resumption of flights signals a thaw in strained India-China ties, although bigger issues like border disputes have not been resolved. Experts believe that people-to-people contact through freer travel could contribute to limited but positive confidence-building between the two neighbours.
Looking Ahead
Though October 26 is when the first flights take to the skies, authorities will be keeping a close eye on passenger numbers, safety measures, and market reaction before expanding. For the moment, resumption is being received as a marker of tentative optimism—a return to normalcy after all that disruption.
For travelers, businesses, and students alike, the re-opening of skies between India and China heralds not only convenience but also new hope for more gliding engagement in the future to come.
