Implement work from home; employee demands after severe weather situations in Delhi

Delhi’s air quality has come under the “severe” category, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) crossing 400 across multiple regions. The toxic air has led central government employees to demand work-from-home arrangements, citing health risks and challenges in commuting amid hazardous conditions.

Employee Concerns

While it undoubtedly is a public health crisis, it’s also a workplace one. Central government employees have complained time and again about respiratory issues and fatigue due to the air pollution in the capital. There have been demands for flexible work policies that would allow short working hours, installation of air purifiers in offices, and all such arrangements.

GRAP Measures in Force

To tackle the scenario, the Delhi government has already put into force Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). It asks us to suspend construction activity, prohibit diesel generators, and reduce vehicular pollution. However, central employees claim that these are insufficient to protect office workers from direct exposure to pollution.

Effect on Life

Beyond working places, the pollution crisis has extended to schools, businesses, and other commuters who use public transport. Schools have limited playing times for kids outside, and most businesses have considered remote working options. Public demand for stricter enforcement of anti-pollution laws and long-term solutions such as a clean energy supply system has intensified.

Wait for the government response

The central government has not said anything and has not given any legal notice about the same, but many health experts and weather forecasters believe that it could be a good short-term measure that could be able to handle the situation well by enabling work from home for the employees as it will not risk their lives.

Delhi’s air quality is sparking urgent calls for action from various quarters. Central government employees’ demands for work-from-home arrangements reflect the broader need for immediate and effective responses to safeguard public health amid this environmental crisis.
