IAF Pilot Killed in Jaguar Crash Had Just Become a Father, Returned to Duty Days Ago

The nation mourned the deaths of two young pilots in the country after the crash of the Indian Air Force Jaguar trainer plane. Squadron Leader Lokender Singh Sindhu, one of the pilots, was a newly married father who had returned to duty just a week and a half prior to the accident.

It happened while taking part in a routine training flight near Churu district in Rajasthan on July 9. Squadron Leader Sindhu and Flight Lieutenant Rishi Raj Singh, who were both on board the twin-seater aircraft, did not make it.

Fatherhood and Return to Duty

The tragedy is especially poignant as Squadron Leader Sindhu had given birth to a baby boy in early June. Like the people who knew him closely, he had gone in for a short leave to spend time with his wife and newborn and had returned to his flying duties on June 30—scarcely ten days prior to the fateful flight.

Sindhu last called his family on the morning of the accident, unaware it would be the last time he would talk to them. His son and wife were in his hometown when they heard the news of the tragic event.

Service and Family Background

Lokender Singh Sindhu was a disciplined and service-oriented officer. Commissioned into the IAF in 2016, he has more than eight years of flying experience. Born in Haryana’s Rohtak district, he belonged to a family that held strong affinities for education and public service. His sister had briefly served in the IAF, while his father had retired from government service.

Friends say that he was a gentle-spoken and reliable officer who had pride in serving the nation. His sudden death has left both his colleagues and the entire community in his hometown astonished.

Crash Under Investigation

The Jaguar plane crashed in a countryside area, away from populated areas. Emergency crews and nearby villagers quickly responded to the site, but rescue was out of the question. No damage or civilian injuries were reported. The Indian Air Force has initiated a court of inquiry to ascertain the reason for the crash.

Both pilots have received tributes. Squadron Leader Sindhu’s tale has touched an especially close chord, focusing attention on the human price of military duty. While investigations remain underway, the IAF and the country stand with the bereaved families at this moment of sorrow.
