The survivor in the Unnao rape case is relieved and determined to seek justice now that the Supreme Court has stayed the bail granted to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar. “The battle for justice is not yet over, and I shall continue to fight till the most severe punishment is meted out,” the survivor said while reacting to the SC decision.
“I will not rest until he is hanged,” she said, reflecting the trauma and anger felt by the public because of this case, which symbolized abuse of power.
What the Supreme Court Ordered
The Supreme Court intervention came following worries over the bail granted by the Allahabad High Court to Sengar in a case involving arms, which was linked to the accident involving the survivor. Although Sengar is actually serving a life term for raping a teenager, this latest development had sparked public outrage over the fear of safety that the survivor is meant to feel.
A Case That Exposed Power and Fear
The Unnao case is several years old and underlined how political influence can be abused to harass victims. The survivor accused Sengar of rape, soon after which her family faced threats repeatedly. It further deteriorated when two of her relatives were killed and she was left critically injured in a car accident, which investigators later said was linked to attempts at intimidation.
