Heavy monsoon rains have ravaged Himachal Pradesh, claiming the lives of at least 37 people and inflicting damages estimated at more than ₹400 crore. The state is witnessing its worst rainy season spell of disasters this year, with extensive floods, landslides, and damaged infrastructure reported from several districts.
Mandi Takes the Brunt
One of the most badly hit regions is Mandi district, where flash floods and landslides caused by heavy rains and suspected cloudbursts have wreaked havoc across the region. According to preliminary reports, numerous individuals are reported missing, and numerous houses have been either washed away or buried under rubble.
The administration confirmed that several roads have been cut off and major services such as electricity and water supply have been badly affected. Rescue services operate day and night, clearing obstructions and accessing marooned citizens.
Transport and Power Disruption
Throughout the state, over 400 roads are still under blockade, including key highways. The power infrastructure has also suffered a huge loss, with scores of transformers destroyed, particularly in the central and lower hill tracts.
Moreover, water supply pipes in many areas of the state have been broken, contributing to the difficulties in dealing with the local authorities and residents. Villages in rural areas have been isolated, rendering rescue and relief efforts even more complicated.
Relief Efforts and Emergency Response
The authorities have sent teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and other relief services. Helicopters were also utilized to access areas not possible through road travel, particularly those affected by landslides where residents are stuck.
The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted warnings of ongoing rain over the coming days and asked people to remain vigilant and refrain from traveling unnecessarily, particularly in hilly and flood-hit regions.
Government on High Alert
State authorities have confirmed that the estimated ₹400 crore worth of damage is only an initial estimate. A complete evaluation will be done after weather conditions stabilize and connectivity to remote areas is resumed. The Chief Minister has urged people to remain calm and assured citizens that everything possible is being done to resume normalcy.
