Delhi: Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has a special request for Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal to give a special industrial package for Himachal Pradesh. Sukhu presented this demand at a meeting held recently in New Delhi. The Chief Minister expressed concerns about the difficulties arising in the hill state, considering the rugged terrain and weak infrastructure that is not encouraging enough for industries and investment.
The Chief Minister emphasized that Himachal Pradesh needs focused incentives to attract investors and create employment opportunities. “Our geographical constraints and high transportation costs make it difficult to compete with industrially developed states,” Sukhu said, demanding focused central assistance to overcome these constraints.
Revival of Industrial Incentives Sought
Sukhu proposed the reintroduction of the key incentives that were in the earlier industrial package, which was abolished in 2010. He asked the central government to introduce incentives like tax holidays, freight subsidies, and interest concessions for industries that come to the state. He claimed that these initiatives would set the economy growing and would make the state contribute to the national economy better.
Emphasis on Sustainable and Inclusive Development
The Chief Minister further pointed out that industrial development must be aligned with sustainability goals. He assured that his government is committed to making the state eco-friendly by adopting new policies and improving infrastructure. Sukhu also highlighted the potential of sectors like green energy, pharmaceuticals, and food processing that could thrive with adequate support.
Response from the Union Government
Piyush Goyal has not made any official statement, but the state is looking forward and waiting as the appeal is being seen as a strategic move to address Himachal Pradesh’s economic challenges. If the special package is approved, it could transform the state into an attractive industrial hub and help spur growth and employment opportunities for its youth.
The Himachal Pradesh government looks hopeful and is waiting for a positive response, as such an initiative could pave the way for equitable regional development and reduce the economic disparity between hill states and other parts of the country.
