Several IndiGo flights were delayed, causing major inconvenience for passengers traveling from Delhi on Sunday due to heavy air traffic congestion at IGI Airport. The delays started early in the morning and continued into the day, affecting flight schedules and frustrating travelers during the festive rush period.
Congestion Hits Operations
According to airport officials, the delays were caused mainly by the high volume of air traffic, compounded by low visibility conditions and continuous flight movements from both domestic and international terminals. With Diwali weekend bringing passenger footfall to a record high, the airport had one of its busiest days of the season. The ATC reportedly asked several aircraft to wait for takeoff clearance, triggering a cascading delay in multiple flights.
Several passengers of IndiGo took to social media to voice their frustration, posting screenshots and videos of long queues, delayed boarding announcements, and aircraft waiting idly on the tarmac. “Stuck inside the aircraft for over an hour without any update from the crew,” a passenger wrote on Twitter.
IndiGo’s Statement
In response to the situation, IndiGo issued an official statement explaining that delays were caused by “air traffic congestion beyond the airline’s control.” The ground staff and flight crews were doing everything possible to lessen inconvenience and ensure smooth boarding once clearances were received, it said. “We regret the disruption caused to passengers and appreciate their understanding,” the airline added.
Impact on Passengers
The worst-affected were passengers scheduled for connecting flights, with many claiming missed connections and rescheduled departures. Airport staff were seen handling stranded travelers and making announcements about revised flight timings. Sources said that the average delay for IndiGo flights ranged between 30 minutes to two hours, depending on air traffic and clearance sequences.
Broader Aviation Strain
Aviation experts said the Delhi airport, being the busiest in the country, faces congestion very frequently during peak seasons. The weather changes, festive travel, and runway maintenance activities added to the situation this week.
While the authorities concerned have promised unremitting monitoring of the air traffic flow, efforts to de-congest and get back to normal schedules are on. However, departing passengers from Delhi have been advised to check well in advance for flight status updates and report early at airports to avoid last-minute chaos. This again points to the increasing stress that India’s air infrastructure is going through, with experts calling for long-term measures that will efficiently manage growing passenger traffic.
