A tragic story emerged from Haryana, in which a youth lost his life in Guatemala while trying to reach the United States of America via the notorious ‘dunki’ route. As per reports, the youth had paid ₹40-50 lakh to an agent who had promised to safely get him to the US, but the risky journey turned out to be fatal.
The Perilous Trek Through Central America
The victim, whose identity has not been officially disclosed as yet, reportedly was traveling with a group of other migrants when the incident occurred. He had begun his journey from Haryana several weeks ago and had crossed many borders to reach Guatemala. Authorities said they suspect that the group was being transported under poor conditions by human traffickers who exploit desperate individuals wanting a better life abroad.
Family devastated, demands action against agent
Coming as a shock to his family, they said the property was sold and money borrowed to send across their youth, based on promises by the agent. They have now accused the agent of having deceived them and also not taking responsibility in the wake of the death. Grieving, the family has called upon the government to take strict action against such illegal networks and to bring his body back to India.

This ‘dunki’ route—which involves flying to Latin American countries like Ecuador or Guatemala before embarking on a dangerous overland journey through jungles and deserts to the American border—is common for many Indians seeking to enter the US illegally. Many cases have been reported over the past few years, often resulting in the deaths of migrants exposed to bad conditions, illness, or even violence by traffickers. Authorities investigating the case The incident has been brought to the notice of local authorities and also the Indian Embassy in Guatemala for confirmation of details. Efforts are being made to verify details and assist the family in repatriating the body. This incident once again brings to light the dangers of illegal immigration and how agents fleece gullible families with false promises of foreign shores in utter urgency. It is a sad reminder that the dreams of an improved life abroad come to a sad end when pursued through unlawful and unsafe means.
