Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a trailblazer in the Indian Army and the first woman to lead an all-women contingent at the Republic Day parade, recently revealed a fascinating chapter of her family’s past during her appearance on Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC). In conversation with host Amitabh Bachchan, she said that her family had fought with Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi in the legendary 1857 rebellion, something of which her family has always been incredibly proud.
A legacy of courage
Col. Qureshi said stories of valor had been handed down from generation to generation at home. Her great-great-grandfather, she claimed, was among the forces that fought alongside the queen in the bitter battles fought against the British. “The stories of sacrifice and endurance motivated me to serve in the armed forces,” she informed Bachchan, continuing that her career in the armed forces is her tribute to that heritage.
Making history in uniform
In her illustrious career, Col. Qureshi has shattered several glass ceilings for women in the military. She is most popularly known for leading the first-ever all-female marching contingent during the 2015 Republic Day parade, which generated international interest. During the KBC show, Bachchan applauded her for her service and described her as a “symbol of strength and determination for the nation.”
Pride and inspiration
Col. Qureshi indicated that her family’s association with Rani Lakshmi Bai inspires her as well as the next generations. “It’s a reminder that courage is in our veins,” she said, urging young Indians to serve India in whatever way they can.
Audience moved by story
The announcement was greeted with applause from the crowd, and numerous viewers took to social media afterward to applaud her patriotism and dedication. Some posts referred to her as a living testament of how history and individual resolve can be used to form strong role models.
Her visit to KBC was not only a display of her knowledge but also a reminder that the ethos of the struggle for freedom continues to exist in today’s soldiers’ service and sacrifices.
