4. KARNATAKA TEMPLE TAX ROW: A row erupted after the Karnataka Assembly passed the ‘Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Bill 2024’ on Wednesday. Under the new rule, temples earning above ₹1 crore will pay 10 percent of the net income, while temples with income between ₹10 lakh and ₹1 crore will pay 5% to the government.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that there are 3,000 temples in Karnataka with less than ₹5 lakh income from where ‘Dharmika Parishad’ gets no money.

1. In a major boost to the Indian Navy’s capabilities, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has given the green light for procuring more than 200 BrahMos extended-range supersonic cruise missiles for deployment on warships.

(a) The proposed acquisition deal – estimated at around ₹19,000 crore – was reportedly cleared in a committee meeting.

(b) The contract between BrahMos Aerospace – an Indo-Russian multinational aerospace and defence corporation – and the ministry of defence is likely to be signed in the first week of March.

(c) BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited was formed as a joint venture between India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya in 1998.

2. Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has signed an MoU with the Indian Air Force (IAF) for integration of futuristic Weapons and Sensors for LCA Tejas aircraft.

3. The Central Government is working on a detailed policy on career progression of women officers in the Indian Army and it will be in place by 31 March 2024. The Government has informed the Supreme Court. Senior advocate V Mohana, representing some women officersofficers said, out of 108 women officers, only 32 were granted command position in regular units.

In a landmark verdict on 17 February 2020, the top court had ordered permanent commission for women officers in the Army, rejecting the Centre’s stand on their “physiological limitations” as being based on “sex stereotypes” and calling it “gender discrimination against women”.

4. The central government has approved a ₹6,000 crore project to install high-power radars along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) to monitor the activities of the Chinese Air Force. The radar will be manufactured by Larsen & Toubro.

5. The Maritime Technical Exposition MTEX-24 stands as a special attraction in the MILAN 2024 taking place in Visakhapatnam. MTEX-24 showcases the latest advancements in naval technology. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated MTEX-24, a three-day defence exposition as part of MILAN 2024.

6. Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, along with Admiral John Christopher Aquilino of the United States Indo-Pacific Command (US INDOPACOM) on Wednesday discussed contemporary security challenges and affirmed stronger ties between both countries.

7. Lt. Gen. Gurbirpal Singh, Director General, National Cadet Corps (NCC), on Wednesday visited the NCC Camp Area at Pangode and interacted with cadets. The NCC cadets of the Thiruvananthapuram Group Headquarters presented a Guard of Honour.

The NCC Director General also reviewed the activities of the NCC Kerala and Lakshadweep Directorate and interacted with the officers. Maj. Gen. J. S.
