‘Drink and drive terrorists’: Hyderabad Police Commissioner’s bold statement following Kurnool crash which kills 20

Hyderabad News

In response to the horrific road accident in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, which killed a minimum of 20 individuals, Hyderabad Police Commissioner K. Sreenivasa Reddy gave a strong warning against drunk driving, referring to such drivers as “road terrorists.” The warning was issued following reports confirming that the party bus involved in the fatal accident was driven by an intoxicated man.

Commissioner denounces reckless behavior

Reddy was angry about the accident, reiterating that those who drive after drinking are just as deadly as terrorists since they risk killing innocent lives. “Each drunk driver is a time bomb. The Kurnool tragedy depicts how reckless behavior can kill families within seconds,” he stated at a media briefing here on Monday.

Crackdown on drunk driving to be intensified

Following the accident, Hyderabad police have declared a citywide crackdown on drunk driving, especially on highways and in nighttime hours. Special enforcement squads will be stationed at key junctions, and the offenders will be charged with nonbailable under the Motor Vehicles Act. “We are showing zero tolerance for such offenses. It’s not only an offense, it’s a crime of putting lives at risk,” Reddy said.

Families grieve as investigation continues

The Kurnool accident was late Sunday evening when a private bus crashed head-on with a truck, killing a minimum of 20 passengers and seriously injuring several more. Initial investigations point to the driver of the bus having drunk alcohol prior to driving. Rescue efforts went on throughout the night, with local authorities making arrangements to ferry the injured to local hospitals.

The public were called upon to be responsible.

Police have also invited citizens to report incidents of drunk or reckless driving through specialized helplines and social media. “We require the public’s assistance to avert such a senseless tragedy. Each call could save a life,” Reddy said.

The Commissioner’s statement has since elicited a robust response on social media, with the majority of users endorsing the action for increased punishment for drunk drivers and the imposition of mandatory breath tests at all primary checkpoints throughout the state.
