Delhi: Residents in Delhi will have to endure some pockets facing water shortage ahead of Diwali. The Delhi Jal Board said that water supply would have to be stopped because of the high ammonia levels in the Yamuna River, one of the city’s major sources of water, and its reduced treatment capacity would need to be shut down completely. This water shortage has been predicted to hit pockets in East, Northeast Delhi, and parts of North Delhi until 1 November 2024.
Cause of Water Shortage
The main cause of the setback is an abnormally intense concentration of ammonia within Yamuna, mainly owing to industrial waste and raw untreated sewage flowing into this particular river. Water-treating plants cannot process that level of water properly, resulting in a decline in the quality of the water altogether; besides, delayed rainy-season showers have also reduced levels inside the rivers, complicating the problem.
Affiliated Areas List
East Delhi: Anand Vihar, Laxmi Nagar, and surrounding areas
North East Delhi: Gokulpuri, Sonia Vihar, Karawal Nagar, and Tahirpur
North Delhi: Shalimar Bagh and some NDMC areas
Suggestions for the residents
The DJB has instructed the residents in the inundated areas to save as much water as possible, and store enough for fundamental needs. In the wake of this, the residents may also experience low-level water pressure or even their supply cut. DJB has arranged water tankers in highly affected zones; it can be obtained after calling their helpline no.
Effect on Diwali Celebrations
Diwali, as celebrated with much gusto in Delhi, often comes with cleaning and socializing that tends to increase water demand. In the present scenario of scarce supply, the regular water usage patterns of households may suffer and impact their festive preparations.
Delhi Jal Board officials are working hard to correct the ammonia issue and increase water processing capacity to restore the normal supply at the earliest.
