Delhi: Delhi-NCR will now implement Stage 3 restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan after the city’s air quality started deteriorating, crossing “severe” category levels recently. With air pollution levels shooting up and the AQI alarmingly high, the Commission for Air Quality Management moved in with Stage 3 restrictions in place to check further health impacts.

EXPLANATION OF GRAP STAGE 3 RESTRICTIONS:

Stage 3 restrictions are aimed at curbing emissions and the otherwise poor management of pollution sources. In these restrictions, it has been stated that:

Construction and Demolition:

All construction and demolition work will remain fully locked down construction or demolitions will be carried out except if absolutely necessary, such as construction related to national security, railway and metro construction, airports, highways, and health facilities.

Ban on Vehicles:

The plying of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles will be banned. The country has identified major polluters as older vehicles, which have become a causative factor for peaks of air pollution. To prevent emissions from traffic, the authorities request citizens to take public transport and make journeys only if necessary.

Health Warning for Residents

The sudden air quality in Delhi puts the most vulnerable-at-risk, including children and the elderly, as well as those with respiratory ailments. CAQM has already told citizens to limit outdoor activities, particularly during the hours of max pollution. It has also recommended N95 masks for people to use in case they do need to step out.

Hospitals are on tenterhooks for an increase in health issues due to pollution.

Future Measures and Awareness Efforts

At the present rate of deterioration, Delhi may face more stringent restrictions under Stage 4 of GRAP. The government will also step up awareness campaigns and urge citizens to do their share by reducing the use of vehicles and promoting such activities towards air quality.

Delhi’s fight against air pollution is a great stride toward the protection of the health of the public, and authorities are laying emphasis on collective efforts toward a cleaner breathing environment for all.
