Delhi to experience a green cracker on Diwali under ‘severe’ AQI alert

With Delhi all set to welcome Diwali celebrations, the city is fighting against increasing levels of pollution, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) already dipping into the “severe” category. In light of this, the government has once again urged citizens to celebrate responsibly and not make the already suffocating air in the capital any worse.

Festive mood overshadowed by pollution worries
While the festival of lights each year fills everyone with joy and enthusiasm, this year’s celebration is overshadowed by health issues. The AQI has remained steadily in the “very poor” to “severe” category for a few days now, and it is hard for locals—particularly children and the elderly—to breathe easily. Specialists have cautioned that even a slight rise in emissions from conventional firecrackers would drive pollution levels into alarming figures.

The government’s call for environmentally friendly celebration
The government of Delhi has again encouraged the use of green crackers or low-emission fireworks that have been certified by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The government has also reminded citizens that bursting conventional firecrackers is still prohibited within the city boundaries. The police have been ordered to act firmly against those violating the ban, while the pollution board continues to keep a track of real-time air quality in different areas of the city.

Citizens are divided over the ban
While doctors and environmentalists have hailed the bans, most residents are of the view that a ban on firecrackers takes out the festive flavor. Some merchants have complained, stating that the ban hit their business during the peak Diwali period. While some others have supported the government’s move, stressing that public health must take precedence over temporary celebration.

Experts caution during serious AQI
Doctors and environmental experts have advised people to stay indoors as much as possible, wear masks, and use air purifiers. They have also warned that continued exposure to polluted air can lead to severe respiratory issues, eye irritation, and long-term health complications. With stubble burning still contributing to the toxic haze, they fear that any additional emissions could push the situation beyond control.

Delhi’s hope for a cleaner Diwali
In spite of the dire prediction, authorities are still optimistic that citizens will heed their call and choose an environmentally friendly celebration. There are awareness campaigns being conducted throughout schools and localities, urging families to make a change to diyas, lights, and decorations over crackers. All eyes are on Delhi as the festival season nears, and it walks a tightrope between tradition and responsibility in its struggle for cleaner air.
