On Monday, various pockets of Delhi and Mumbai witnessed unannounced power cuts that left the people perplexed and worried. The power failures, which were sudden, were apparently a part of a nationwide mock drill under ‘Operation Sindoor’—an exercise in preparedness to test the emergency response systems. Although power was resumed in a matter of hours in all areas, the absence of pre-announcement created a chain reaction of confusion among people.
Mock Drill to Test Emergency Protocols
The power outages were deliberately planned to test how different departments—power, transport, emergency services, and police—would react to an unexpected crisis. The simulation was based on a hypothetical cyberattack or terror attack on India’s infrastructure, specifically large urban grids. Officials stressed that the exercise was needed to find gaps and enhance coordination between central and state agencies.
Residents Caught Off Guard
Residents in many areas of South Delhi, East Delhi, and suburban Mumbai used social media to give vent to anxiety about the sudden blackout. Many believed it was a technical glitch or an infrastructure breakdown. “There was no information. For two hours we had no power and no idea what was going on,” recounted a Mumbai resident in Andheri. The same protests echoed in Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar and Mayur Vihar.
Opposition Slams Government For Lack of Communication
The government has been slammed by opposition political leaders for not giving the public prior notice. “These exercises are necessary, but the people should not be kept in the dark—literally and figuratively,” said a Congress spokesperson, accusing the Centre of a lack of planning and communication. BJP leaders, on the other hand, defended the drill, saying that surprise was an essential element to test genuine readiness.
Authorities Urge Calm, Assert Lessons Learnt
The Ministry of Home Affairs followed up with a release urging citizens to stay calm and confirming that the mock drill was successful in accentuating strengths and weaknesses in India’s emergency networks. Officials assured that evidence from the drill would be drawn into a report and utilized to enhance national response mechanisms.
Though the blackout could have created temporary disruption, experts feel that such stress tests are a must while getting ready to face real-time threats in an ever-changing glob
al security scenario.
