Delhi hosts fitness marathons despite toxic air and severe pollution levels

Despite the air quality in Delhi nosediving to ‘severe’ levels with AQI readings hovering around 400, hundreds of fitness enthusiasts took to the city’s streets on Sunday for various marathons and cycling events. The events were planned weeks in advance. Organizers claimed that they followed medical guidelines, but many health experts have raised concerns over the timing of such outdoor activities.

Air quality and warnings:

Toxic smog has continued to choke the national capital as pollution levels surged after Diwali celebrations and burning of crop residue in neighboring states. Many monitoring stations showed PM2.5 concentrations way above the safe limits, prompting advisories from the CPCB that asked residents to avoid strenuous outdoor activity. Yet, the spirit of Delhi’s runners seemed unfazed, with many saying they didn’t want to let pollution dictate their lifestyles.

Organizers defend the decision: Organizers of the event insisted that precautionary measures were in place, such as medical tents, hydration points, and emergency response teams. “We encouraged participants to wear N95 masks, and we shortened the distance of the run,” said one organizer. “The intent was to promote health and resilience, not recklessness.” Despite this, a number of participants reportedly complained of respiratory problems and eye irritation during the run. Experts sound alarm: Yet, health professionals have sharply criticized the decision to hold mass fitness events in such hazardous air. “Running in toxic air is equivalent to smoking several cigarettes in a few hours,” said a pulmonologist at AIIMS. Doctors have urged authorities to put public health above outdoor events till the AQI improves to at least the ‘moderate’ range. Delhi’s persistent struggle: Where anti-pollution measures under GRAP Stage II are still in place, with curbs on construction and vehicular movement, Delhi authorities do not seem to achieve much improvement in air quality. Citizens are yearning for stricter and more sustainable steps. Meanwhile, the city’s runners—each a testament to endurance and defiance—take their daily jog through the haze, hoping the next race comes with clearer skies, cleaner air.
