The Delhi Chief Minister has stated that his government will implement an overall action plan after the Supreme Court recently ordered it to drive away the stray dogs roaming in the city’s streets within a period of eight weeks. The move comes after the top court showed severe concern regarding the increasing cases of dog attacks and public safety risks posed by the swelling stray population.
Action plan to stress on humane steps
As per the CM, the strategy will follow humane and legal measures to tackle the problem. He guaranteed citizens that the process of removal would be carried out in coordination with the welfare organizations of animals so that no cruelty is done to the animals. The government will use strategies like increasing the shelter facilities, running large-scale sterilization campaigns, and streamlining the adoption process.
Balancing animal rights and public safety
The CM recognized the dilemma of finding a balance between maintaining public safety and being humane to animals. He emphasized that the administration will be in full compliance with the court’s directive while also following ethical treatment principles. The goal, he explained, is to arrive at a sustainable solution that will deter future clashes between humans and stray dogs.
Coordination with multiple agencies
The new plan will entail cooperation between the municipal corporations, the Animal Husbandry Department, and NGOs. Special task forces are likely to be sent to hotspot zones where there are large numbers of stray dogs and the number of complaints is high. Publicity campaigns will also be initiated to motivate people to exercise responsible feeding habits and conduct adoption drives.
Public urged to cooperate
The CM urged residents to cooperate with the authorities for the period of implementation, stating that drastic action would be undertaken against anyone who stood in the way of the process. He ensured the public that the government’s sole aim is to provide a secure environment for the people while being compassionate towards the animals.
This announcement marks the beginning of what could be one of Delhi’s most significant animal management operations in years, with the clock already ticking on the Supreme Court’s eight-week deadline.
