In a chilling wave that has left authorities and parents alike in the capital worried, at least ten schools and one college in Delhi were sent bomb threats in three consecutive days, leading to evacuations, parents’ panic, and an extensive probe by the authorities.
The officials say that the threats were based on the first report on July 14, when schools like Dwarka’s St. Thomas and North Campus’s St. Stephen’s College received emails threatening them with planted explosives. Within the next two days, other major schools like Vasant Valley and Richmond Global were also targeted in the same manner. In both cases, the authorities moved quickly, evacuating the staff and students and searching the buildings thoroughly. Fortunately, no explosive devices were discovered.
Still, the pace and frequency of such threats has left the Delhi Police to suspect more malevolent intentions. The police force’s cyber unit has seized the probe and suspects dark websites are being used to hide the sender’s origin of the threatening letters. The emails, according to investigators, were passed through encrypted services and routed through foreign VPNs, significantly making it difficult to trace them.
A top police officer stated that the emails bear the indications of having been produced by anonymous servers running out of India’s jurisdiction, making it a challenge for the investigation. “We are working with international law enforcers and cybersecurity authorities,” the officer further added, “but such cyber trails are deliberately made untraceable.”
Though all the threats made until now were mere hoaxes, the psychological damage to students and school administrators has been extreme. Several children were allegedly terrorized by the abrupt evacuations, and some parents called on schools and the government for more stringent cybersecurity measures.
Delhi’s Directorate of Education has issued an advisory to all educational institutions, emphasizing the need to stay alert and follow emergency response procedures. Meanwhile, the High Court has also taken note of the repeated bomb threats and asked police to submit a status report on the investigation.
Cybersecurity professionals suspect this may be a case of targeted harassment or an effort to destabilize school operations. They emphasize the need for digital hygiene and education to prevent such cyberattacks in the future.
The Delhi Police continues investigating all possibilities as attempts to track the source of the threats increase.
