Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recently questioned on social media the diversion of his IndiGo flight from Delhi to Jaipur. The unplanned detour irritated a number of passengers, including Abdullah, and mystified them about the cause of the route adjustment.

In an X (formerly Twitter) post, Omar Abdullah said, “What is happening @IndiGo6E? Our flight was arriving in Delhi when suddenly we were told we were headed to Jaipur. The weather in Delhi is pleasant. No reason given.”

Delhi airport issues clarification

After the outrage, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) released an official statement explaining the incident. Based on the airport authority, the diversion was performed because of “temporary congestion” in the Delhi airspace. The statement clarified that a number of incoming flights were diverted during the period for reasons of safety and air traffic management.

There were no weather problems. “Diversion was done as a precautionary step to deal with heavy traffic and facilitate smooth operations,” DIAL added.

IndiGo replies, quotes air traffic and ATC instructions.

IndiGo also issued a statement similar to that of the airport authority. The airline stated that the decision was taken at the behest of Air Traffic Control (ATC), and the flight was diverted safely to Jaipur because of congestion beyond Delhi.

“We acknowledge the inconvenience to our passengers. “Safety is our major concern, and we are cooperating with the authorities to cause as little disruption as possible,” IndiGo further stated.

Passengers have mixed reactions

Though some passengers welcomed the airline’s explanation, others criticized the airline for not providing timely information while the flight was in progress. Social media sites were filled with comments raising questions about why passengers were not informed on time and why diversions happen in the case of clear weather.

Omar Abdullah’s public grievances lent more weight to the issue, with many demanding improved coordination and communication between airlines and airport authorities in such diversions.

Growing focus on air traffic concerns

This incident has again brought to the fore the increasing air traffic congestion at India’s major airports such as Delhi. According to aviation experts, with growing passengers and higher frequency of flights, airports require stronger infrastructure and coordination systems to manage peak-hour operations efficiently.

Whether it was an isolated case or a repeated issue, the Delhi airport and IndiGo now have increasing public pressure to ensure passengers are not kept in the dark when something like this happens on board.
