Severe weather has caused devastation in India’s northeastern states, killing more than 30 individuals and displacing hundreds of people. This is due to relentless heavy rain over the last few days, which has resulted in enormous flooding, landslides, and destruction of infrastructure in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya. Rescue efforts are in round-the-clock operations as water levels in major rivers are still on the rise, inundating villages and severing road connectivity to many remote places.
States Under High Alert, Schools Closed, Trains Canceled
Red and orange alerts have been issued by authorities in various districts, advising citizens to remain indoors and not to venture out unless absolutely necessary. In Assam, there have been break-ins across various embankments, with floodwaters sweeping away agricultural land and houses. Schools have been closed in the worst-affected areas, and numerous trains have been canceled or re-routed because of inundated tracks. State disaster management organizations and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been mobilized to help with evacuation and relief.
Delhi Prepares for Gusty Winds and Rain, Yellow Alert Triggered
In the meantime, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared a yellow alert for Delhi and its surrounding regions, predicting gusty winds and light to moderate rain in the next 48 hours. The capital is likely to see gusts of wind of up to 40 kmph accompanied by occasional showers, which could provide some relief from the scorching heat but cause congestion on roads and outdoors. People commuting to work have been asked to exercise caution, particularly during rush hours.
Monsoon Pattern Shift, Experts Warn of Abrupt Weather Conditions
Weather experts have attributed changing monsoon patterns and global warming as the major causes of the rising number of such extreme events. The Northeast is witnessing more severe rain-bearing events concentrated over less time. “This is elevating the likelihood of flash floods and landslides,” a senior IMD official explained.
Relief Efforts On, PM Modi Informed
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been informed of the situation and has assured maximum support from the Center. Relief camps have been established in the affected areas, and food, water, and medical aid are being sent in quickly. The government has also guaranteed financial help to those who lost their family members or property due to the floods.
As the region struggles with nature’s fury, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging citizens to stay alert and follow weather advisories.
