Cyclone Phengal LIVE: Landfall will hit Puducherry soon, confirms IMD official

Puducherry: Tropical cyclone Phengal, a disastrous cyclone over the Bay of Bengal, will make landfall near the area of Puducherry on Friday night, one of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials confirmed. It is said that the cyclone will persist with winds of upto 90-100 km/hr with heavy rainfall and move across the coast in the next few hours.

IMD officials confirmed that the groundwork started around 7.30 pm and would continue till midnight. The cyclone is expected to gradually weaken as it moves inland, but heavy rains and strong winds are still likely to hit Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Strong winds and heavy rain are lashing the coastal areas.

Coastal districts, such as Puducherry, Cuddalore and parts of Chennai are already witnessing heavy rains and strong winds. Reports of uprooted trees, cut power lines and flooding are starting to pour in, and officials are paying attention to these problems.

Fishermen on the affected beaches have been advised not to venture into the sea, while people in low-lying areas have been advised to evacuate to safer areas.

Evacuation and relief operations On

State governments in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have initiated major recovery projects in vulnerable areas. Thousands of people displaced by the storm are living in relief camps, where emergency response teams are being packed with food, water and medical aid.

Transport and Power Supply Affected

The cyclone has severely affected transport in the district. Many flights to and from Chennai and Puducherry have been canceled or delayed, and suburban train services in Chennai are running on a short schedule. Bus services in all flood-prone areas have been suspended.

Power supply has been affected in parts of Puducherry and Cuddalore. Officials are working to resume power supply as soon as the conditions are favorable.

IMD Issues Alerts for Neighboring States
The IMD has issued red alerts for southern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and parts of Andhra Pradesh as the rain is going to be heavy to very heavy in the coming hours. Neighboring states like Kerala also can expect moderate to heavy rains as the cyclone goes inland.

Public Advised to Stay Indoor

Residents in the affected areas have been advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The authorities are constantly monitoring the situation and providing updates to ensure public safety.
With Cyclone Fengal’s landfall already underway, all eyes are on the storm’s path and intensity as authorities work tirelessly to minimize its impact.
